Our Story

Cedar Farm was established in the Summer of 1987 by the young local couple Peter and Julie Baillie.

Peter was the resident pig farmer and Julie – whilst looking after their two daughters – had the idea that the redundant buildings surrounding the core of the farm could become retail spaces and a café. Julie met Sally O’Farrell who shared Julie’s interest in British craft and thus helped to create the first two businesses on site, The Gallery and Piggies Tea Room.

Julie’s idea was in many ways visionary, and Peter’s practical abilities to transform lofty ideas into everyday reality unfailingly impressive. Since the birth of Cedar Farm, many other rural centres have popped up with much the same notion to provide creative, social and energetic hubs for people who live in the countryside.

Over the last 34 years, our site has grown steadily and continuously, with The Shops, The Studios, The Pig Barn, The Design Shed and most recently, The Barn, each being built in turn as the times and needs of customers have changed. Everything here is built with love as the starting point, and with great respect for the surrounding environment. Forward thinking and attention to visual detail are defining features of the Cedar Farm ethos.

Peter and Julie’s daughters, Rebecca and Katie – since ages 4 and 2 respectively! – continue to help and support in the running of Cedar Farm. They are now 38 and 36, raising the next generation already eager to guide Cedar Farm into the future.
